Players at Risk, Mumbai Indians owners to take Strict Action after IPL 2025 Final
Mumbai Indians’ owners looked very frustrated when their team got knocked out by Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 on 1st June 2025. Mumbai Indians, while batting first, set the target of 204 runs in the first innings, which initially looked above par as per Mumbai Indians’ standard of defending all the 200-plus targets.
But in return, Punjab Kings had a different plan, especially their skipper Shreyas Iyer, who played a terrific innings of 87 runs in just 41 deliveries, including 5 fours and 8 sixes, to eliminate the 5-time champions Mumbai Indians. Punjab Kings will play their 2nd IPL final against RCB after the 2014 season. This season, a new champion will be seen, because both teams, RCB and PBKS, have been striving for a trophy since 2008.
What went Wrong For the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025?
Starting from the start, Mumbai Indians during the first 5 games of the IPL 2025 lost 4 games and won just 1. It’s not just about this season; they had been in this situation many times before and had a habit of a strong comeback. During the start of the season, the top order did look consistent, along with the combination used by the management. The openers’ position looked settled in the first five games, but sometimes Surya, Jacks, and Tilak were seen at the 3rd position.

Rohit Sharma looked completely out of form in the first 5 games, but got in form at the right time. But as per his standards, it was not the best season, but a decent one. Along with Rohit this season, Ryan Rickelton, a left-handed wicket-keeper batsman, opened the innings for the Mumbai Indians. He also had a decent season with a lack of consistency, scoring 388 runs in 14 innings with a strike rate of 150. In the middle-order, except Suryakumar Yadav, who had an exceptional run in the tournament, he was on the verge of getting the Orange Cap, but failed to achieve that feat.
The main problem now came from the captain and the Mumbai Indians’ management, who failed to set the positions of Tilak and Jacks. On many occasions, Will Jacks was seen either inside the powerplay after the fall of the first wicket or at number 5. Many times, the batting order for both Jacks and Tilak was changed as per the situation, which did not work for Mumbai this season.

Now it’s the turn for Hardik Pandya, the captain. At the start of the tournament, he has done a great job with both bat and ball. But suddenly, he looked completely off in the second half of the season when MI started dominating, one of the factors behind MI’s failure to make it into the final. After Suryakumar, Naman Dhir was another batsman who was seen doing his work perfectly as told. Scored some crucial runs in the end, with a Strike rate of over 180, and was Mumbai’s best fielder in the IPL 2025 season.
Now it’s the turn for the bowlers. Bumrah was Bumrah as usual in the entire season, he came back after missing the first 4 matches because he was recovering from an injury. Meanwhile, MI tried some of their scouted fast bowling talents, such as Ashwani Kumar and Satyanarayana Raju. Bumrah had the best economy as compared to other bowlers in the entire season, which is something pervasive with him, being very economical. Next comes the other two Pacers, Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult. Both were very expensive and ineffective in the powerplay overs, with the new ball as their strength, but that still backfired on them.
Also, the spinners’ department looked very inconsistent. They had to use a part-timer, Will Jack, as their primary off-spinner, and used Karn Sharma only on a few occasions. The only experienced spinner they had was Mitchell Santner, who did well in a few of the games, but could have been used more effectively on the field by Hardik Pandya.
