CRICKET OPINION

This Series Could be End for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Test Cricket

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might soon face the wrath of Indian selectors. The two stalwarts of Indian cricket find themselves clueless towards the end of their careers. Once seen as run machines for the team, able to win matches from any position, they now appear as walking wickets in any condition. The two could soon see the bench and maybe be out of the Indian test squad.

Virat Kohli: The Unreal Downfall

Virat has not been the same since 2020. The lack of consistency, especially in test cricket, has been the talk of the town for quite some time now. While his batting style remains the same, his form has gone on a long holiday and doesn’t seem to be coming back to him anytime near. The hundred in the 1st Test of IND vs AUS at Perth was a glimpse of how good a player he is. Sadly, such performances come occasionally now.

The recently concluded New Zealand series saw Virat’s trouble against spin and his habit of chasing the ball at the fourth or fifth stump. In six innings, Virat had an average of 15.50 and scored a mere 93 runs, 70 of which came in an inning only. His continuous decline in form has become a sign of worry for India and the Indian fans.

Virat also ranks among the players with the most single-digit scores in 2024. He has not crossed the single-digit mark 13 times in the current year. With two matches remaining in the series, it would be interesting to see if he turns things around.

Rohit Sharma: Re-visiting the Intent

Rohit Sharma has also been under the radar for his lack of recent performances. His intent has perhaps earned the reputation of a game-changer, but it has also caused him to be out of form for a long time now. His stats against the New Zealand test were disastrous. Averaging just 15 in 6 innings, Rohit scored a total of 90 runs. His failure to big innings has led the team down for quite some time.

Along with Kohli, Rohit also features in the list of players scoring the most single-digit score in 2024. Rohit has 14 single-digit scores to his name, just behind Shanto of Bangladesh, who has been dismissed 15 times. These numbers do not justify the talent he has.

The social media outrage and the former cricketers have started to point out the failures of these two greats. Earlier, the long failure had led to the dropping of Pujara and Rahane. The same could happen with the two if they don’t come good in the remaining matches.

The coming three matches or 6 innings will be crucial for them to gain back the respect and be as dominant as ever. The talent and the skills are unmatched, and they would love to replicate their old performances again. Brisbane would be the right place for these two to gain back their confidence and play a major role in the team’s success.
