Cricket Fraternity Reacts to Vinesh Phogat’s Disqualification
Indian cricketing icons Sachin Tendulkar and Ravi Shastri have expressed their support and admiration for wrestler Vinesh Phogat following her disqualification from the Paris Olympics. Vinesh, who had made history by reaching the final of the women’s 50kg freestyle category, was disqualified after being found 100 grams overweight. Despite her efforts, including drastic measures like cutting her hair to meet the weight limit, she was unable to compete in the final.
Sachin Tendulkar took to his official X account to offer words of encouragement to Vinesh Phogat and fellow wrestler Nisha Dahiya. Tendulkar praised their courage and determination, emphasizing that their performances had a lasting impact on the nation. He wrote:
“Nisha Dahiya and Vinesh Phogat, your courage and determination have inspired the entire nation. Nisha, fighting through injury with such spirit was truly remarkable. Vinesh, despite the heartbreak of disqualification, your incredible journey to the finals and victory against Yui Susaki have earned our deepest admiration. You both embody the spirit of champions. Although the outcomes weren’t what we had hoped for, your resilience and heart have made a lasting impact. Hold your heads high, knowing that the entire nation stands with you in support. Thank you for giving your all for India. We are incredibly proud of you both.”
Ravi Shastri, former Team India head coach, also shared his thoughts on Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification. Shastri, who led the Indian team to victory in the 1983 World Cup, acknowledged the harsh realities of sports and offered his encouragement:
“A bitter pill to swallow. Truly heartbreaking. This is where sport can be ruthless. Stay strong, Vinesh Phogat. We know how tenacious you are. Your path to the final was nothing short of spectacular. God bless.”
Both Tendulkar and Shastri’s heartfelt messages highlight the respect and pride they have for the athletes’ dedication and perseverance. Ever since their retirement, both have been very vocal about supporting athletes irrespective of discipline.
