Indian Cricket Team adapting the concept of Split Captaincy

BCCI recently announced the Indian cricket team T20I and ODI squads for the upcoming Srilanka tour of India 2023, where two 3-match series of each T20I and ODI format will be played. BCCI did some bold moves by removing senior players like the full-time captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul from the T20I list. Hardik Pandya has been named the T20I captain and vice-captain of the ODI format in place of KL Rahul, and Rohit Sharma will continue to lead in the other two formats of the Indian cricket team.

BCCI also dropped Shikhar Dhawan from the ODI squad who had a bad run in the Bangladesh ODI series and he also averaged around 35 in the ODIs of the calendar year 2022 which was also the lowest for him since 2013. For the opening slot, other players like Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan who were making use of the opportunities have been included in the ODI squad.

Now it is clearly visible that the Indian Cricket Team is trying to acclimate the concept of split captaincy. This could be one of the best moves in the history of the Indian cricket team because in the past MS Dhoni mentioned that split captaincy does not work for Team India. As the dynamics of the formats are getting changed every decade now is a good time to have specialists for a particular format so that the workload, injuries, and the availability of the players could be managed more easily.
