The Future of Indian Test Cricket: 5 Batting Sensations to Watch

The cricketing hub of the Indian cricket circuit is filled with numerous stars who have been a part of a rich and unparalleled legacy. From the days of Vinoo Mankad to Sunil Gavaskar and from Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli, Indian cricket saw great success and reached an unprecedented height. The young pool of Indian cricket is also filled with some exciting talent who have shown a glimpse of the greatness that can potentially be achieved in the future.

Certain cricketers are showing positive signs of carrying forward the Indian batting legacy and setting an example to inspire the next generation to take test cricket. Some of them have already achieved and surpassed the legacies set by the former batsmen but yet to become a role model like them.

Let us look at the players who could rule Indian test cricket in whites in the coming years:

Yashasvi Jaiswal

Jaiswal has been an interesting story in Indian cricket. Coming from a humble background and early struggles, Jaiswal’s rise has been phenomenal. His ability to dominate the bowlers and bat for a longer period makes him a wonderful player. In the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25, his contribution has been valuable in India putting a decent score on the board. His habit of converting hundred into daddy hundred shows his temperament, skills, and hunger to score more. Out of all 4 centuries, he has 2 double hundreds (209 and 214*) and two more than scores of 150 plus scores (171 and 161).

Nitish Kumar Reddy

The test at Melbourne has surely put Reddy in the category of the players to watch out for. In his debut test series, in overseas conditions and with the team under pressure, the grit and determination that the 21-year-old lad exhibited showed his hunger for runs and will to adapt to the situations. Selected based on the skillset showcased in the IPL, also Reddy didn’t have much exposure to domestic cricket. However, management’s faith in his skills turned out to be a fruitful one for India first in the T20I series and then in the test series.

After trying out Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur, Indian selectors have been looking for a more effective fast-bowling allrounder who can contribute with both bat and bowl as per the situation. Nitish Reddy lived up to the expectations of the selectors and surely going to see more of him in the coming years.

Shubman Gill

Gill has been a regular member of the Indian side for a long time now. Though criticized heavily for the inconsistency in whites, Gill has risen to the occasion whenever needed. The youngster will look to have many runs to his name and be a bit more consistent than he is now. Indian management has also chosen him for the number 3 position after dropping rigid Cheteshwar Pujara due to his ability to take on the bowlers and play at a better scoring rate.

Shubman Gill has proved his worth on many occasions but his numbers in the away tours are a big concern that he needs to put a lot of focus on, and the management would want much more from him.

Dhruv Jurel

Jurel has been one of the best scouting geniuses from the national selectors. His debut happened during the Anthony de Mello Trophy 2024 (India vs England Test Series in India) in the absence of Pant and the inconsistency of KS Bharat. His selection in the Indian test squad was based on his tough batting temperament with the tailenders and difficult situations in Ranji matches.

A solid batsman who likes challenges thrown at him. Dhruv Jurel doesn’t come on the back of much domestic experience. But as they say, talent finds its way so Jurel was fast-tracked into the Indian team and grabbed the opportunities with both hands. He is likely to remain in the management’s prospectus for a long time. All the fans remember his performances in the England test series.

Rishabh Pant

Undoubtedly India’s biggest match-winner especially in test matches. Pant took the cricketing world by storm ever since his U-19 days and hasn’t looked back since then. A ruthless hitter of the ball, and also perhaps one of the best behind the wicket. His ability to dominate bowlers at will and change the course of the game immediately put him on the list of players to keep an eye on. His test debut took place during Pataudi Trophy 2018 and till now, just at the age of 26 years, he has surpassed all the legacies set by the Indian wicket-keeper batsmen. Since the start of the WTC cycle he has been India’s most successful batsman who has scored almost in every test series he featured.

As cricket progresses, it will be interesting to see who remains at the helm and goes on to break countless records. Whatever happens, the future of Indian test cricket lies in safe hands.
