IND vs AUS: Records Made in the Perth Encounter of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024

The opening encounter of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 test series was supposed to be filled with a lot of thrillers but ended up being one-sided. After winning the toss, India opted to bat first on the Perth Stadium’s green wicket which offers enough pace and bounce to trouble a batsman. The bowling units from both sides had the upper hand on the first day.

India while batting first were buddled into a mere score of 150, but when Australia arrived to bat in the 3rd session of Day 1 Indian pace attack came with all guns blazing and reduced Australia to 67-7, Jasprit Bumrah was the one who made the life of Australian’s difficult.

Team India continued their domination from the 2nd day to the end of Day 3 with Indian bowlers restricting Australia at 104 and leaving the Australian team in deep trouble by 46 runs lead. After that Indian players were all over Australia in every department and didn’t give an inch to come back and handed Australia’s worst-ever defeat in ages. Also, India regained the 1st position on the WTC 2023-25 points table.

Let’s look at the records made in the IND vs AUS 1st Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024

A partnership that sunk the hopes of Australia

As the game progressed on Day 2, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul looked comfortable at the crease facing the Aussie pace bowling attack. The pitch settled and got flattened with time which helped the Indian openers to stitch a 200-run partnership for the first wicket. The record was previously held by Sunil Gavaskar and K Srikant, who had scored 191 for the first wicket in Australia. This innings made sure that India was well set for a massive lead.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Daddy Hundred

Yashasvi Jaiswal marks his name in the elite company of players who score the most 150+ in test cricket before turning 23. He has scored 4 test centuries in his short career and is surely a permanent member of the team going forward. The second inning showed his character, where he took time to settle down. Once set, he was ready to go big and started the series with a fine hundred.

End of Virat Kohli’s Test Century Drought

The long wait for the 81st ton and a test century finally came to an end during the Perth test. Seated comfortably in a good position, Kohli took his time and very nicely paced the innings to score another ton in Australia. With this, he comes one more century close to the record of 100 centuries in the international circuit. Kohli looked in all control during his innings which is an ominous sign for Australia.

Visiting Batters With the Most Number of Centuries In Australia

The first test belonged to Virat Kohli, who joined another list of record books. He now stands at number 2 as a visiting batter with the most number of test centuries in Australia. The first position is held by Jack Hobbs of 9 test centuries in Australia. Surpassing the great Sachin Tendulkar, Kohli now holds this incredible record with 7 test centuries in Australia.

Best Bowling Average in Post-World War Era

Since World War 2, of all the bowlers who have picked 30 wickets or more in Australia, Bumrah ranks second in the list. Only behind Sir Richard Hadlee, who averages 17.83, Bumrah has picked 40 wickets in just 8 matches at an average of 18.80. It makes him the deadliest bowler of this generation, and Australia will be looking to handle him with so much seriousness.

After a home test series defeat against New Zealand by a 3-0 margin, this Border-Gavaskar Trophy has started on a great note for India, and they would love to capitalize on the momentum. Doing so will make them invincible in the Australian conditions and perhaps the first team to beat Australia in three consecutive series in their backyard.
