Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings; IPL 2022 Weaknesses, Concerns, and Areas to Improve in the upcoming IPL 2023 Auction:

Mumbai Indians

Concerns & Weaknesses:

They let go more than half of their bowling unit of the last season IPL 2022 for the upcoming IPL 2023 Auction. But the major concern was their batting unit in the last season containing out-of-form senior members Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard, uncertain Ishan Kishan, injured Suryakumar Yadav, inexperienced Tilak Varma, and Dewald Brevis, not giving Tim David many chances, absence of Jofra Archer, and lack of all-rounders costed the five-time IPL champions to end up at the last place of the league table.

Strengths:

Their batting will be the main strength featuring the youngsters like Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Dewald Brevis, and Tim David.

The pace duo of Jasprit and Jofra could be one of the deadliest bowling combos in the upcoming IPL 2023 season.

Areas to Improve:

Rohit Sharma’s form, he did not even score a half-century in the last IPL season which is the first time in the history of his IPL season career. But he is one of the most successful captains in IPL history, he will definitely bounce back more stronger.

Jasprit Bumrah always had star overseas partners like Malinga and Boult. If Jofra again misses out, that will again be a big blow for the Mumbai Indians franchise.

Lack of all-rounder options, they have a couple of talented players like Ramandeep Singh, and Hrithik Shokeen but they need to be groomed like Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya.

Missing attacking leg-spin options, Mumbai Indians released both of their leg spinners Mayank Markande and Murugan Ashwin.

Chennai Super Kings

Concerns & Weaknesses:

In the last IPL 2022 season, the major concern was with their entire lineup because some of their key players were injured and some were inconsistent. Top-order also was not much consistent as well, Ruturaj struggled a lot to reach the two-figure mark in the first few games and later also he was inconsistent. Bowling looked puzzled without Deepak Chahar. Middle-order looked totally out of form and struggled while chasing the targets after the decent start by the openers which cost them to end at the 9th and also the second last place of the points table.

Strengths:

Their main strength is their variety of all-rounder options like Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Dwaine Pretorius, Jadeja, Santner, and Chahar. They all have the experience and ability to contribute with both bat and ball.

Their new find Mukesh Choudhary made CSK’s life easier in the absence of Deepak Chahar in the few matches of the last season. But this duo together could be very scary in the powerplay overs of the upcoming IPL 2023.

Areas to Improve:

Injury-prone key players, CSK would not be happy with the injuries of Ravindra Jadeja and Deepak Chahar. Deepak Chahar missed the entire IPL 2022 season and he has been injured one more time in the Bangladesh tour. Jadeja also came back for the Asia Cup after an injury then he again got injured and missed the entire Team India schedule till December 2022.

The Out of form middle order consisting of Shivam Dube, Rayudu, Jadeja, and Dhoni needs to perform well after a decent start by the top order.

Inconsistent openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway. Ruturaj’s form was a major cause of concern for CSK because in the earlier IPL 2021 season. Ruturaj was the Orange Cap winner and suddenly in the next season, his form collapsed out of nowhere. But his performances in the domestic circuit will boost his confidence to get his form back.

Inexperienced death bowling, they have released Dwayne Bravo who used to trouble the batsmen with his slower ones but this time they have got Matheesha Pathirana also known as “Baby Malinga”. Pathirana needs to be groomed as a death bowler specialist.
